About West Cavan Camino
A Camino built by community
The West Cavan Camino was established in February 2025 as a rural community initiative by the people of Glangevlin and the Glangevlin Development Committee. From the beginning, the aim was clear: to create something meaningful for visitors while also delivering real benefits locally, supporting businesses, strengthening community pride, and encouraging sustainable tourism that protects what makes this region so special.
With significant investment and support from Cavan County Local Community Development, and with guidance from expert consultants in sustainable green tourism for rural areas, a comprehensive Glangevlin Development Plan was created. The West Cavan Camino emerged as one of the plan's key pillars, not as a standalone attraction, but as part of a wider vision for the future of the area.
This is what makes the West Cavan Camino different. It isn't a commercial product dropped onto a landscape. It's a project shaped by the people who live here, people who know the history, the routes, the seasons, the folklore, and the quiet beauty that can't be faked.
A journey that respects the land
At the heart of the West Cavan Camino is a simple promise: to help people experience West Cavan in a way that is environmentally responsible and culturally respectful. The landscape here is fragile in places, ancient in others, and deeply treasured by the communities who call it home. That’s why sustainability isn’t an add-on — it’s part of the foundation.
The Camino is designed to encourage low-impact travel, slower exploration, and a deeper connection with the natural world, the kind you don't get from a car window. It invites visitors to walk, to pause, to look properly, and to appreciate how much story can exist in a “quiet” place.
Heritage, hospitality, and a corner of Ireland that feels untouched
Winding through the breathtaking landscapes of West Cavan, the Camino offers visitors the chance to experience heritage, unspoiled natural beauty, and the warm hospitality that defines this unique corner of Ireland.
This is a place of changing light, open skies, mountain views, old roads, hedgerows, and hidden histories. It’s rural Ireland at its most authentic, not staged, not hurried, not polished into sameness. You can feel the texture of the past here, but also the life of the present: local people, local stories, and the steady determination to keep rural communities thriving.
And yes, it's easy to call it “idyllic.” But “utopic” might be closer to the truth on the right day: when the air is clear, the hills stand sharp against the sky, and the only sound is your own footfall and the wind moving through the hedgerow.
Why we created the West Cavan Camino
The West Cavan Camino exists for two reasons:
- To share this place with visitors in a meaningful way, through a walking experience that connects people to nature, heritage, and wellbeing.
- To support the local economy and community, by encouraging sustainable tourism that benefits the area long-term, rather than extracting from it.
We want visitors to leave with something more than photos. We want them to leave with a sense of connection, to the landscape, to the culture, and to the people who have shaped this region across generations.
What to expect
The West Cavan Camino is ideal for walkers who want more than a “route.” It’s for people who enjoy:
- Natural beauty and wide, open landscapes
- Local heritage and hidden history
- A slower pace of exploration
- Rural hospitality and community spirit
- A sense of reflection and wellbeing while walking
Whether you're coming as an individual, a couple, a group, or part of a wider walking community, this Camino offers a memorable experience, shaped by nature, guided by community, and grounded in sustainability.
Where it begins
The walk begins from Glangevlin Hall and St. Patrick's Church in Cavan, an ideal starting point for a route that carries you outward into the hills, the heritage, and the remarkable landscape that makes West Cavan what it is.
